I have been talking to an experienced modder who recommends using material swaps to create a variety of npc outfits. One particularly memorable use is changing the numbers on vault suits. My material swaps were set up so that one mod swapped the body, and the other swapped the hands.

For armor this is probably already done but i know a lot of weapon mods use their own keywords and attach points for material swaps.
Bgsm and bgem files should be within the data/material folder.
I always disliked how the creation club faction paint jobs aren't used in the game. Adding the outfit mashup to your mod in the ck. In this case when i apply the body mod, the body materials are swapped, then when i apply the hand mod, the hand material is swapped but the body material reverts back to its original material. A form must actually use them.

Note that material swaps don't do anything just by existing; This video will try to explain how to create a new armor item in game to be used for retextures using the material swaps. If your textures have jpg and png format, convert them to dds using the paint.net program. Create omod (object modification) using an ap_ style keyword for the category.

A not so short tutorial on creating material swaps using the fallout 4 creation kit. Create mswp (material swap) referencing the base bgsm (from the nif) and point to the new (swap) bgsm. You can choose a material swap to apply when choosing a nif for the armor addon. Several new textures and meshes that, combined, adds tons (literally) of new clothing variations to the game.
Then you need to create an omod to apply the material swap to the item. One of the things the ck is worse at actually. You'll also need the appropriate attach points on the base item you're editing. Basically you will need to create a material swap that will tells the game to swap from the default bgsm to the new one.
Then equip and swap between saved outfit sets with the press of a button.
