I find the heavy and medium armors rather ugly. In fallout 4, the wardrobe system allows the sole survivor to make up their own outfit from a variety of clothing and armor. For example, i like the drifter outfit, can i improve the armor rating through crafting or will it just stay that way? Most will take up all armor slots, but some will allow additional armor.
Some gear is meant to go over clothes and others go under, however there is the odd piece such as drifter armor that just replaces both slots, thus making it not a good choice :p.
