I tried use the wardrobe but the sim clothes were changed to a completly random set, none of the planned outfits. Random changes like you described, and also several duplicates of an outfit. Available for download at mod the sims.

Roommates with the big closet quirk should not change into random everyday outfits anymore.
I've noticed a few sims in different saves that randomly have outfits on that i didn't put on them, and i can't remove them in cas because they don't….
